Dynam Waco

When it comes to classic open cockpit biplanes, those known by “Waco” sit proudly at the front of the line. The choice of most any pilot who could figure a way into the cockpit back in the 1930’s, surviving Waco aircraft are still highly sought after and command a premium price whenever they come up for sale. These airplanes are so desirable that a handful of enthusiasts founded Waco Classic Aircraft and reintroduced the Waco YMF-5 in the mid 1980s as a new production aircraft.

Great airplane! Review by Timothy
This is a great looking Waco that flies as good as it looks. Its light wing loading delivers very scale-like flying at half throttle and will deliver surprisingly speed and performance with more throttle. Most importantly it looks great on the ground and in the air. There are a few minor issues that need to be addressed. The cabanes are stamped and have sharp edges that need to be filed. While I was at it I painted mine to match. The tail surfaces on mine arrived warped but a little work with a hair dryer straightened them. They also flex quite easily so I added .070 carbon rods to simulate the scale tail bracing which looks great. More importantly, the plane has a much more solid feel to elevator and rudder inputs compared to ones I have flown without the bracing. This simple mod will transform your Waco. I switched the supplied wheels with Dubro 3" Super Slim Lites which fit perfectly and make grass field flying a breeze. They also look more scale. I also added a Hobby Eagle flight stabilization unit which helps greatly in windy weather flying especially with the light wing loading. The plane is guaranteed to turn heads at the field and I'm thoroughly enjoying mine.

99.5 Review by John Lobsiger
Nice plane but poor manual and not all the right hardware hoping it will fly as good as it looks. Not a plane for the first time builder. (Posted on 9/9/2016)
Great Fun & bargain price Review by scott boersma
This plane comes mostly assembled. It is easy to fly and plenty of power for aerobatics. Required 1/2 oz of weight in the nose. It would balance better with a bigger battery. (Posted on 9/6/2016)
The good and the bad Review by William Hesse
Like others: Good flyer, needed a bit of lead in the nose even with the 2800mah battery all the way forward.
Poor instructions.
Vertical stab badly dished. Heat only partly effective. Only OK for the price. (Posted on 9/4/2016)
My second YMF Review by Paul J Sebastianelli
This is a very enjoyable RC plane to use and admire. Despite the tiny screws and nuts one has to deal with to assemble it, the effort is well worth the trouble. It is well-mannered, easily controlled and has very sturdy landing gear, so often the weakest part of other models like this. Parts are readily available, but for the tailwheel connector/insert. If this fuselage integral part is lost from the tail end, there's no way to replace the tailwheel, which is readily available!! Also, the control hinges are, ( characteristically with Dynam ) weak, and must eventually be re enforced, as they WILL separate! So, I did fly this WACO so often I wore it out! Time for a new one! Wonderful flying model. Review by Carl D Barker
I flew my original Dynam Waco 5D for 3 years and I was amazed at how easy it was to fly. It became my favorite-until 2 weeks ago when the ground came up too suddenly and claimed it. I received my replacement last week. I was impressed by the secure packaging. All components were individually boxed within the external package. Since I own three other Wacos I am very familiar with it's configuration so it was very easy to assemble. The only problem I encountered was with a misaligned wing mounting screw.
I am very happy with this plane and I would recommend it to anyone who loves biplanes. (Posted on 7/31/2016)
Quick build, nice flying plane Review by Brandon Utley
went together pretty quick even though instruction manual was lacking in details. wish the foam was EPP since the EPO foam used is really soft. maiden flight went great-only had to apply a little trim to get her nice and level. i wish the servo bay was easier to access as others have mentioned. i would buy this plane again. Dynam Waco Review by Fast Freddy
The toughest part of the assembly of this Waco was the teeny little nuts and bolts holding the wing struts. The plane couldn't possibly fly any better and land so sweetly than it does.It looks-performs-and knife edges like a champ. Very satisfied to say the least! (Posted on 6/22/2016)
Very nice plane for the money Review by James D Becker
Overall I like this plane very much. It looks very nice. It went together with little effort and as other reviewers have indicated, it's an awesome flyer. I gave it four stars because of a few minor problems: When mine arrived the tail feathers were slightly warped. Nothing that I couldn't straightened with a hair-dryer. The paint job does bleed black into the yellow. It would be great if these lines were more crisp. I also thought the groves in the lower wing for the fiberglass rods could have been made deeper. The tubing does stick up a tad in some areas. I had no interest in the LED lights so I pulled all of its wiring. Again these are all pretty minor issues. I would definitely purchase this plane again. It gets so much attention by fellow flyers out at the flying field. (Posted on 5/31/2016)
Gorgeous plane with some minor issues. Review by FoxProGT
The build....
Yes my tail section was a little warped out of the box. Not as bad as some of the other reviewers tho. My kit came with all the screws needed plus extra so i guess i got lucky or Dynam made sure to pack some extra screws which is great.

The plane went together easy. DO NOT use locktight on the wing strut screws once there on. It will cause the plastic to become brittle, crack and break apart like an egg shell! My only issue with the design of this plane is the servo and receiver location. It takes unscrewing 7 screws to remove the bottom wing to access the servos and receiver. Other then that, the planes looks great once its all together!

The flight.....
She looks just as great in the air as she does on the ground. She will fly all day with half throttle or do nice climb outs on full throttle. She has a nice glide slope that will give you time to think and set her up to land (if not to low to the ground) and a easy stall characteristic (slight nose drop with no tip stall/wing drop). The only real problem i had (as well as other people) was the weak speed control. On my second outing the esc went up in smoke as i applied throttle on take off. I replaced it with a ZTW Mantis 45a esc and everything's been good. (This might not be so minor to some people specially if this issue causes a crash) I wouldn't recommend this for a beginner pilot. It would make a good 3rd plane imo.

Shes a blast to fly tho and is defiantly a crowd pleaser!

Shout out to Grayson hobby for the mad fast shipping! (Posted on 5/29/2016)
Excellent packing and fast delivery Review by Jose
This is my second WACO, just delivered today and it came well packaged and after a thorough review, all components are in perfect condition, will proceed to build it within a couple of days and continue to enjoy this spectacular plane.
The plane came with a 12X6 prop but I use a propeller 13x4 Xoar which changes the flight characteristics of the plane and it feels much more scale flying.

Great Flyer!! Review by Kevin

Good price, good quality, great bipe Review by SandyGabby
I have had a number of bi-planes in the past 35 years, but the Waco YMF 5D from Dynam was the easiest to assemble and the flight
characteristics were very scale. It flies like a basic RC trainer and I would not hesitate recommending this plane as a good second
RC plane. (Posted on 10/2/2015)
What a beauty Review by Kevin
A very beautiful aircraft but has a crazy problem. The elevator comes warped very bad. I had Grayson send me another and I ordered one from another company and both came warped. My fix was to take a piece of carbon flat and glue it into both sides of the elevator. I left it with some weight over night and now it is very straight and the plane fly's very nice. I love flying scale and this aircraft looks so good on passes. As with every Dynam I have bought the screws that hold the motor mount to the motor are loose and you need to check them and add locktite to them. I have yet to have a Dynam that they were not loose. Also the ESC has to be programmed to get that low speed bump bump out of it. On a few I had to get another brand of ESC to correct this problem. I hope Dynam will take notice to the elevator problem and fix it so others can have an out of box happy flight. Check those screws! (Posted on 8/29/2015)
Beautiful plane. Review by Kevin Beck
Beautiful plane. Watched video of build YouTube. Very good video. Forget the sorry instructions. Plane was boxed perfectly. Inspected everything and found the elevator is warped very bad and 1/2 of it was torn from foam hinge. To out of shape to use. Hoping Grayson will send another. Checked out the motor and found that it has the ever present low end bump bump bump. Reset ESC and most of it is gone. Dyson needs to fix this problem as I have 6 different kits and they all do this. CG was spot on with battery all the way forward. Take time to watch the build video on You Tube. (Posted on 6/18/2015)
Review by Richard Brooks
Just received my Waco and some screws are missing, the 3 bladed prop is a 2 blade and the rudder section is badly warped which I'm not sure I can fix. Also the paint colors from part to part are not the consistent as in the top wing sections are two different shades of yellow. Will write another review once I have flown it but may need to order a new rudder before that can happen. (Posted on 5/11/2015)
Review by Brian Dowers
Simply a joy to fly!

My rudder and elevators were slightly warped but nothing I couldn't work out. Easy to assemble and simply flies great! I use a 4S 3000mAh battery and COG is between 85mm and 90mm. Many consider the COG in the manual simply wrong. I did add two small washers to each upper motor mount for added down thrust as it was basically straight from the factory. This was a recommendation from forums I had read concerning this plane.

I would definitely buy this plane again. It also looks as good as it flies! (Posted on 1/22/2015)

What a joy to fly! I have been thru a lot of airplanes, and next to a Parkzone T-28, this is my absolute favorite. I have worn mine slap out! The wing strut attachments are fine as I have probably 50 flights on this plane with no issues. Some of the plastic parts may need reglueing after 20 flights or so, but hey its a foamy and a darn good one. Glad they are back in stock. I will be ordering another one soon! Keep em coming Basil! A great flyer.

1. Use thread locking compound on the small Nuts & Bolts used throughout the wing fittings. I did not, and lost two nuts on the first flight.

2. Replace the four screws holding the cabane "N" struts to the side of the fuselage with screws about 10 mm longer. The screws provided only engage about 3 mm of the plastic fitting and a chance meeting with a stick broke the ends off the plastic fittings on one side. Installing longer screws was a simple fix.

3. I fly from grass. I removed the stock wheels and wheel pants, replacing the wheels with 3-inch diameter, low-bounce, balloon wheels... it is now a perfect grass flyer.

4. The finish is quite delicate and shows the slightest bump. I am thinking about giving the entire plane a thin coat of clear, satin acrylic. In the meanwhile, I did cover the wing's leading edges with clear packing tape. The stick, spoken about above, did no damage to the wings. (Posted on 9/21/2014)

1st, the build. It went OK, all parts fit nice, a tip for installing the tiny nuts and bolts that hold the wing struts on is to wrap a piece of tape sticky side out on a finger then pick up the nut with it stuck to the tape and guide it to the screw till started, then tighten with tools as needed. The plane looks great and the paint does not rub off easy like many other kits. Next, the maiden flight, I am using a 3 axe gyro, but I am sure not needed as the plane flies great! Take off was easy, just 3/4 throttle and up she went. I was flying in 10mph wind and 17mph gust. I was amazed at how well she flew, no trim needed at all, must have set her up right. I could slow her down to just crawl and no stall at all. The landing was a bit hard of a bump due to the gust, but no damage at all to the plane. This is fast becoming a best in my hanger, love it so far (Posted on 6/1/2014)

What a great plane! Just ordered another as my first one had a clevis pull off a pushrod and crash after many great flights. No issues at all with strut mount brackets as some have said. Fellow club members love this plane(even the nitro and gas guys) and several have purchased them because of my good experiance. I will continue to buy Dynam planes as they are a great value. Grayson ships quickly and does not gouge you on shipping charges. (Posted on 5/20/2013)

Just got it. Kit missing the PA2.3*20mm screws for the wing and stabilizer. Bought some #4 sheet metal screws and tapped the holes to accept them. Worked okay. The aileron push rods for the top wings are too long. screwing in the clevis to shorten it causes the clevis to rub against the top of the clevis holder restricting movement. Have to cut the threaded end or put in a new z bend. (Posted on 5/19/2013)

I purchased two Dynam Waco's, one for myself and one for a friend, and I am glad I did. Dynam has come out with another hit. The airplane goes together fairly easy and really looks good. On the first flight I had to do very little trim and the airplane flys great and handles great as well. Take offs are very easy and it has plenty of power with the set up they recommend. Flight time is around 10 minutes. Landings are a breeze. Just ease off the throttle as you are coming in and give it a little up elevator and touch down with no problems. I have been flying for 15 years now and I must say that the Dynam Waco is well worth the money and a great deal as well. (Posted on 4/24/2013)

I fly a giant scale Great Planes Waco with a 36cc gasser in it and love that plane. I've had my Dynam Waco since late Summer 2012 and we were all very happy with it's build and flight caricaturists. I fly it on 3300mah 4s and it balances perfectly with very good power on an APC 12x8 and 12x10 prop. I love my IMAA gassers, but also love my flight days with my electric buds and Dynam along with FMS and others have given me a hangar of fun, inexpensive parkflyers to enjoy at my secondary flying field. Dynam hit a home run with their foamy Waco. (Posted on 3/31/2013)

Watch my build and flight video of this plane on utube(dementia0090). I was a little afraid of crashing since I have never owned a biplane. 99% of my planes are Dynam. They are great planes but you do have to use common sense and experience and examine the weak points and fix them as with any plane! This plane went together well and was I surprised when I took off. It handles really nice. As easy flying as my Super Cub. I use the Turnigy Nano Tech 14.8v 2650mah battery and get about 8 minutes of flight. I will watch the strut plates for breakage and may reinforce or cut new ones from some other material. My brother flys the Dynam Peaks really hard and fast with many crashes and have not broken the strut plates on that plane!! I give it 5 Stars!!! (Posted on 1/18/2013)

I have about one hour flight time on mine since 01/01/2013. Its a joy to fly and havent had anything fall off yet. The only problem I have had is the tail wheel wont lock into place I have to realight it after about three landings. A lot of airplane for the reduced price. Agan its a joy to fly handles and does great scale wheel landings . (Posted on 1/17/2013)
Review by Tom Sanford
Dynam has ruined a nearly perfect airplane by molding the strut attachment points in the wings from yellow plastic instead of carbon fiber, as in all other Dynam biplanes. These parts begin to weaken and fail almost immediately under normal flight stresses. I'm on my second set of struts already with no relief in sight. I will probably have to fabricate some carbon fiber parts, if I want to keep this plane in the air.

I suggest you stay away from this airplane unless Dynam corrects the situation, or you just like fabricating your own parts.. (Posted on 11/23/2012)
